Eichler Neighborhoods of Marin

Marin County, California is home to many unique neighborhoods, each with its own character and charm. Among these neighborhoods are those with Eichler homes, designed by mid-century modern developer Joseph Eichler. Eichler homes are known for their distinctive mid-century modern design, open floor plans, and indoor-outdoor living spaces, and have developed a bit of a cult following. 

Here are some of the Eichler neighborhoods in Marin County:

  1. Terra Linda Terra Linda is located in northern San Rafael and features over 600 Eichler homes. The homes in Terra Linda were built in the 1950s and 1960s and are known for their unique style. They feature flat or low-sloping roofs, clean lines, and large windows that allow natural light to flood the interiors. The neighborhood is known for its strong sense of community, and many residents enjoy participating in the Terra Linda Neighborhood Association, which hosts community events throughout the year.

  2. Upper Lucas Valley Located just north of Terra Linda, features approximately 300 Eichler homes. The homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1960s and are known for their large lots and stunning views of the surrounding hills. Many of the homes feature an atrium or courtyard that serves as a central focal point, bringing natural light and fresh air into the home.

  3. Marinwood is located in the northwestern part of San Rafael and features approximately 200 Eichler homes. The neighborhood features several parks and open spaces, including the Marinwood Community Center, which hosts a variety of classes and events for residents of all ages.

  4. Lower Lucas Valley Located just east of Terra Linda, Lower Lucas Valley features approximately 100 Eichler homes. The homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1960s and are known for their unique A-frame design. The homes are situated on large lots, and many of them have been extensively remodeled and updated while still maintaining their mid-century modern charm.

  5. Greenbrae Greenbrae is located just south of San Rafael and features approximately 60 Eichler homes.  Many of the homes have been updated and renovated to include modern amenities, while still maintaining their original character and charm.

  6. Mont Marin/San Rafael Park is located in central San Rafael and features approximately 40 Eichler homes. The homes in this neighborhood are known for their atrium designs. The homes are situated on large lots, and many of them have been updated and renovated to include modern amenities.

Eichler homes are highly sought after by those who appreciate mid-century modern design and architecture, and many residents enjoy the sense of community that comes with living in an Eichler neighborhood.
